During this essay I am going to discuss how The Tempest and Frankenstein use ways in which their characters exercise power and control. The tempest was written by William Shakespeare, its about Prospero (who was once the duke of Milan) seeking revenge on his younger brother Antonio because he stole the position of Duke of Milan from him. Prospero and his daughter have been banished to a remote island which they live on with two slaves (Caliban and Ariel). Frankenstein was written by Mary Shelley, its about a Victor Frankenstein’s pursuit for knowledge and how it leads to him making a terrible mistake of trying to recreate life. But the monster he created had betrayed him and started to murder Victors loved ones.

Frankenstein was influenced by multiple things. These include the time Mary Shelley at Lake Geneva in Switzerland, the reading of a collection of ghost stories, a vision , etc. But i believe that the thing that inspired Mary Shelley the most to write Frankenstein was the romantic period. The Romantic period was an artistic movement that originated in Europe towards the end of the 18th century, it emphasized intense emotion such as apprehension, horror, terror and awe.
